Relive Attack on Titan's Greatest Moments in Attack on Titan 3

Translate

We are about three years out from the final season of Attack on Titan, and the franchise is still going strong with the upcoming Attack on Titan 3 from Koei Tecmo. And the game's demo at Tokyo Game Show 2026 is as advertised: playing through the story and hitting the greatest moments from the anime series.

Granted, the Attack on Titan 3 game demo at TGS doesn't run you through the entire story of Attack on Titan. Rather, it allowed players to experience the iconic fight between the characters Zeke and Levi Ackerman from Attack on Titan Season 3. Of course, because this is a game adaptation of the scene, there is some retooling of the events. This is relatively unobtrusive and helps players acclimate to the gameplay elements and become accustomed to the battle mechanics in Attack on Titan 3.

And it's those gameplay elements and battle mechanics where Attack on Titan 3 shines, for the most part. Swinging around on the Omni-Directional Mobility (ODM) gear is fun and intuitive, letting players point their character in whichever direction they want to go and take off. However, one of the pitfalls of this is that you need some amount of spatial awareness. As in, your character goes where they are facing, not the camera. So, you need to make sure your character is facing where you want to go, regardless of where the camera is pointing.

But in combat, those movement controls with the ODM gear become less of an issue. This is because much of the targeting is done automatically, and all you really need to do is hit the attack button or the dodge button. While this may seem tedious in terms of general gameplay, since there is always a chance to mistime or misread a dodge, the threat of taking damage or winding up in the clutches of a Titan is ever present. So, while not common for the Attack on Titan 3 demo, the game is still exhilarating.

What really makes the combat, though, are the special attacks. These are keyed to separate buttons and aren't always readily available to players. But when you execute a special attack, it's as if you are in the Attack on Titan anime series. It's nice that Attack on Titan 3 limits how often you can use the special attacks, too, since an overuse of them would disincentivize any other combat tactics and remove the idea of using them at key moments in battle.

For example, in the battle with Zeke, you face a few unnamed Titans before taking Zeke on in his Beast Titan form. The question for players then becomes, “Do I use my special attacks on the unnamed Titans to get to Zeke quickly or wait?” This push-pull between when to use special attacks adds to the depth of the game, despite its relative simplicity.

There's no doubt Attack on Titan has maintained its popularity since the anime series concluded in late 2023. And Attack on Titan 3 is a continuation of that popularity. And while the thought of playing through the events of the series is enticing and the gameplay and combat are fun, I'm not sure I will be picking up the game on release. Rather, I want a little more time to pass before I feel the need to. But for those who want that experience now, it's a great end-of-year pick-up.
