Learner driver charged after 17yo dies in Adelaide crash

A learner driver has been charged over the death of a teenager who died in a car crash in Adelaide's northern suburbs overnight, police say.

Police received reports that a station wagon had struck a Stobie pole at the intersection of John Rice Avenue and Marleycombe Road at Elizabeth Vale just after 3:15am today.

A 17-year-old male passenger from Direk died at the scene.

Three other passengers were uninjured.

"The driver, an 18-year-old man from Parafield Gardens who holds a learner's permit, was arrested and taken to hospital for testing," police said in a statement.

"He has since been charged with aggravated cause death by dangerous driving, refuse breath analysis, three counts of breaching learner's permit conditions and driving without a qualified supervising driver."

The driver was refused police bail and would appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court later today.

Major Crash investigators attended the scene.

The boy's death is the state's 85th life lost on South Australian roads this year.
