Seemingly coming out of nowhere, the Dungeon Crawler Carl franchise has become a worldwide phenomenon, which is even harder to believe considering that its author, Matt Dinniman, self-published the very first book in the LitRPG series. Now consisting of eight published books, and there even being a television adaptation currently in the works at Peacock, it seems as though this sci-fi extravaganza has captured the hearts of its fans.
The Franchise That Has Taken Over the World
First published back in 2020, Dungeon Crawler Carl and its subsequent sequels, have become the number one LitRPG series on the market, with the story following the exploits of Carl, who is joined by his ex-girlfriend's cat, Princess Donut, as two of the few survivors left following an alien takeover. Now forced to compete in a dungeon crawl as part of an intergalactic reality show program, the pair must survive all manner of obstacles and enemies in order to survive.
Now, on top of an upcoming television series and plans for a series of graphic novels, Dungeon Crawler Carl is about to receive a complete genre swap, turning from a LitRPG into a full-blown RPG experience.
Carl and Princess Donut Are Unstoppable
Set to launch this November, Dungeon Crawler Carl fans can experience the ultimate TTRPG courtesy of Renegade Game Studios. Available to pre-order now, Dungeon Crawler Carl: Unstoppable is a TTRPG experience that will task players with gathering friends and navigating the 18-floor World Dungeon from the novel.
"Fight your way through mobs and bosses as Carl or Princess Donut! Play solo or bring along a friend for a co-op crawl!" The official item description reads. As such, you will be able to craft and customize your cards as you go, and with a power curve on the horizon, you will need all the help you can get in order to get through all levels of the dungeon.
Each time you play, you will get to tackle a brand-new floor, meaning that this TTRPG experience offers hours of fun and replayability. "This box contains the first three floors. In true roguelite fashion, however, only a few benefits that you purchase with XP will carry over to the next floor!" So, if you want to experience all of the other floors, you will have to check out the expansion packs also available at Renegade Game Studios.
That does not mean that the base game does not include enough content to keep you going though, especially as Dungeon Crawler Carl: Unstoppable includes:
- 2 Crawler Portrait Cards
- 6 Character Cards
- 16 Starting Core Cards
- 22 Starting Threat Cards
- 12 Additional Threat Cards
