36-hour water shutdown for Durban: More areas face supply cuts this week

Residents and businesses across parts of Durban are warned to prepare for reduced water supply as essential maintenance begins on the city’s bulk water system this week.

The eThekwini Municipality has advised that water supply will be affected by planned maintenance being carried out by uMngeni-uThukela Water (UUW), the City’s bulk water supplier.

The work will mainly affect areas in the Inner West and Outer West regions, with smaller areas in the North and South regions also expected to be impacted.

When will the Durban water supply be affected?

The maintenance shutdown is scheduled to begin at 08:00 on Tuesday, 29 September, and continue until 20:00 on Wednesday, 30 September 2026.

During the shutdown, the 51 raw water pipeline supplying the DV Harris Waterworks will be taken offline.

This means DV Harris Waterworks will temporarily be unable to produce bulk water while its raw water supply is shut down.

The municipality warned that this will result in a reduction in water supply to parts of eThekwini.

However, Midmar Waterworks will continue supplying water to the Umlaas Road reservoirs during the shutdown, which is expected to help limit the impact on some affected areas.

The municipality said residents should also be aware that water supplies may not return to normal immediately after the maintenance is completed.

Once the bulk water supply is restored, the distribution network and reservoirs will need time to stabilise.

The municipality said that residents in affected areas should plan ahead and reduce their water consumption while the work is underway.
