With the PlayStation 5 being almost six years old, it's inevitable that the PlayStation 6 is just around the corner. And while we've yet to learn any official news from the good people at Sony, the rumor mill is in full swing. While it's common knowledge that Sony are open to pitches from developers for new games, we've yet to learn officially what games we might expect to see at launch for PlayStation 6. Uncharted 5 perhaps? Or maybe a third Horizon game? Well, if the leaks are true, we're going back to the past.

A leaker over on the ResetEra forum believes that two titles are all but confirmed for PlayStation 6 and they're quite surprising. Yes, they might be brand-new titles, but they belong to existing IPs that are older than some players. The first game expected to launch on the PlayStation 6 is a new installment of the Ape Escape series. It's also suspected that the game is already in development and it being worked on by the limitlessly talented Team Asobi. Team Asobi have done amazing things with the Astro Bot license and would be a great choice to drag a near 30-year-old franchise onto modern screens.

Ape Escape

The second game mentioned by the self-proclaimed leaker is Sly Cooper. Sly Cooper first hit our screens on PlayStation 2 way back in 2002. While not a breakout hit, it was an underrated gem and helped launch three more games in the series while also putting Sucker Punch on the map. That said, The Sly Collection launched on PS3 back in 2010 and instead of reviving the franchise, it pretty much sealed its faith. So, it seems less likely that Sony would take another swing at the Sly Cooper franchise for the PlayStation 6 based on the game's history.

Whether the rumors are true or not, the gaming community have mixed feelings about seeing new editions of these two old classics. While some welcome a fresh look at old games for a new audience, others are a little more skeptical. One commentor wrote:

They already tried to do a new Sly Cooper on PS3 and it bombed.

And now it's Ape Escape's turn 😈

While another had a more positive take on the leaked news:

Nope. It'll be successful.

3D platformers were a no-go during the 360/PS3 gen while today, it something people are asking for and want more of. Ape Escape is a known quantity and still one of icons of the PlayStation.

Keep the budget in check, don't sell it for $70, and it'll do well.

There has been no confirmation of titles for the PlayStation 6 from official channels yet, but the thought of seeing older classics getting another stint in the limelight feels exciting. We're living in the age of nostalgia and remakes with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake just around the corner and companies like Capcom remaking their entire back catalog of Resident Evil games to great success.

So if you're a fan of either Sly Cooper or Ape Escape, the next few years might make you fall in love with gaming all over again. While most gamers are excited to try Grand Theft Auto VI out on the PlayStation 6 when it launches, older fans like me really want to see classics make a comeback. Now, if someone could just work on a new Space Quest adventure . . . I'd be ever so grateful.
