Pokémon Gives Scyther A Wild New Design 30 Years After Debut

Pokémon's 30th anniversary has seen several distinct new releases that completely reimagine iconic fan-favorites from all nine generations dating back to the beginning. Pikachu has naturally been at the center of many of those celebrations, receiving multiple commemorative redesigns across new merchandise and the 30 Celebration TCG set, including an extravagant gold-foil statue that transforms the franchise mascot into a luxury display piece.

The Eeveelutions have also received fresh anniversary merch and new artwork, giving some of Pokémon's most beloved and adorable creatures new looks for the milestone year. Meanwhile, Pokémon XP brought even more dramatic reinterpretations of classic creatures, including newly revealed statues of Mewtwo and Gengar that translate their familiar designs into highly detailed display pieces.

Together, these releases show how heavily the anniversary has leaned into celebrating Pokémon's history, particularly nostalgia for the Gen 1 lineup, while also finding new ways to bring back each generation that fans have grown to love for decades. Now, another Generation 1 favorite is getting the same treatment, with Scyther receiving an impressive new design of its own later this year.

Scyther is getting an impressive new collectible courtesy of Funism, with the Generation 1 Pokémon captured in a much more dynamic pose than its familiar game appearances. The officially licensed figure depicts Scyther with both of its enormous scythes raised and a translucent curved effect sweeping around its body, making it look like the Bug/Flying-type has been caught mid-action. Its wings are extended behind it, while a dedicated base includes a nifty Scyther-engraved nameplate.

The figure is made from PVC and ABS and measures about 5.5 inches tall. Hong Kong's 7-Eleven currently lists the collectible for roughly $89, with preorders running from September 16 through October 13, 2026. Moonroad also has it available for preorder at $89 and estimates orders will arrive within one to two weeks, subject to potential delays. Moonroad offers international delivery through FedEx, so collectors outside Hong Kong should be able to get ahold of one as well.

The new figure is especially fitting for Scyther because its basic design has remained pretty standard across Pokémon's history. Early Ken Sugimori artwork already established the green body, insect wings, and enormous forearm blades that still define it today, while its original Pokémon TCG appearance arrived in 1999's Jungle expansion.

Scyther also made memorable early anime appearances in episodes like "Showdown at Dark City" before Tracey eventually caught one during the Orange Islands storyline. Pokémon has found other ways to reinvent the concept over the years, most notably through Scyther's evolutions.

Scizor was a truly unique evolution, expanding the mantis-like appearance with a metallic red Bug/Steel design, while Pokémon Legends: Arceus introduced Kleavor, a Bug/Rock evolution with huge stone axes. Funism's new figure goes in the opposite direction, keeping Scyther's classic appearance intact while making the original design look faster, sharper, and more dramatic. It's a relatively affordable and unique new take on a beloved Gen 1 Pokémon that collectors will not want to skip.
