Bosch's Legacy Sequel Is Coming Back Soon

While Prime Video’s Bosch franchise might not be bringing back its original star Titus Welliver anytime soon, the original show’s acclaimed legacy sequel is set to return in short order. Although Prime Video’s James Patterson adaptation Cross and the Lee Child series Reacher are both huge hits, neither of these were the first successful thriller procedurals that the streaming service adapted from a series of major bestsellers.
Way back in 2014, long before author Michael Connelly’s The Lincoln Lawyer novel series also spawned a successful Netflix series, his Bosch books became a hit procedural on Prime Video. Starring NYPD Blue guest star Titus Welliver as the titular taciturn LAPD detective, Bosch was based on Connelly’s long-running novel series of the same name, and the show pulled no punches when it came to gritty, R-rated crime drama.
Taking inspiration from The Shield and The Wire as well as traditional network TV procedurals like Law & Order and CSI, Bosch was a successful marriage of network TV’s case-of-the-week format and cable’s darker, more mature character drama. Welliver’s homicide detective, Bosch, spent seven seasons investigating grisly murders in the Hollywood Hills, and Bosch was successful enough to spawn a sequel series, Bosch: Legacy, shortly after its series finale. As Bosch: Legacy wrapped up, the spinoff Ballard began in 2025.
Ballard Season 2 Is Set To Arrive In Late 2026 (Or Early 2027)
Ballard stars Maggie Q as Bosch’s titular coworker Renee Ballard, an LAPD detective specializing in cold cases. As Bosch was a lone wolf throughout both the original series and Bosch: Legacy, Ballard was one of few colleagues he truly trusted and relied on. Thus, much like Reacher’s spinoff Neagley, Ballard allowed Prime Video to expand their successful action thriller franchise with a female-led spinoff focused on an existing supporting character.
Ballard nonetheless represented a risk for the franchise’s future, since Welliver’s central role was vital to the success of both Bosch and Bosch: Legacy. Unlike ensemble cop procedurals like the CSI, NCIS, FBI, or Law & Order shows, Bosch was very much a character study that centered primarily on its title character. Fortunately, Ballard season 1 managed to make Q’s protagonist just as complex and compelling as Welliver’s Bosch, so Ballard was swiftly renewed for a second season after season 1 earned universally stellar reviews.
Ballard season 2 was originally expected to premiere in 2026, so viewers can reasonably assume that the show’s sophomore outing will be coming in early 2027, or possibly even very late this year. Unlike traditional police procedural shows like Law & Order: SVU, streaming shows don’t always have regular, reliable release schedules. As such, it wouldn’t be a complete shock if Ballard season 2 arrived before the year is out, despite the current absence of a confirmed release date for the season.
Ballard Season 2 Isn’t The Only Upcoming Bosch Series
Fans of the detective drama franchise have plenty of reason to rejoice, since Ballard season 2 isn’t even the only new Bosch show on the way soon. The prequel Bosch: Start of Watch will flash back to the start of the eponymous detective’s career, recasting Welliver’s Bosch with Gotham’s breakout star Cameron Monaghan.
Seeing a younger Bosch navigate his early career should be a fresh new angle for the franchise, and one that finally moves past its focus on Welliver alone. Welliver has been booked and busy since the end of Bosch: Lergacy and his guest role in Ballard season 1, with the star appearing in The Westies, The Night Agent season 4, and Dark Winds season 4.
Since Bosch was never an ensemble piece, unlike its fellow LA cop show Southland, it was initially tough for the show’s first spinoff to emerge from the shadow of its predecessor. Fortunately, with Ballard season 2’s release rapidly approaching, it is clear that the Bosch spinoff has earned a fandom of its own.
