A 38-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a 28-year-old woman in Perth's south-eastern suburbs.

St John WA paramedics found the woman unresponsive at a home on Taree Street in the suburb of St James on Wednesday night.

Police were called to the scene and the woman was taken to Royal Perth Hospital but was declared dead.

Police have alleged the woman was assaulted by the man in the days prior to her death and had suffered extensive injuries.

They have also alleged it is a case of family and domestic violence.

Homicide Squad detectives spent yesterday investigating what happened at the house and questioning the man in custody.

The St James man is due to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court today.
