Muntinlupa bans fishing, sailing amid habagat

MANILA, Philippines—The Muntinlupa City government on Monday, Aug. 17, prohibited fishing and sailing activities on the city’s waterways as the southwest monsoon, or habagat, continued to affect the country.
The city’s Lake Management Office (LMO) issued the warning, prohibiting residents from going out on the water or fishing using any type of watercraft as a safety precaution.
“Mahigpit na ipinagbabawal ang pumalaot o mangisda gamit ang anumang uri ng sasakyang pandagat para sa kaligtasan ng lahat (Going out on the water or fishing using any type of watercraft is strictly prohibited for everyone’s safety),” the city government said in its public advisory.

The LMO said it issued the restriction “as a precaution” as weather conditions remained unsettled due to the habagat.
The city government urged residents to monitor weather conditions and official advisories through the City Government of Muntinlupa – OFFICIAL and Muntinlupa City Department of Disaster Resilience and Management Facebook pages.
For emergencies, residents were reminded to save the city’s emergency hotline at 137-175.
Habagat to persist
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said moderate to heavy rains were expected over six provinces in Luzon on Monday, with the habagat forecast to bring 50 to 100 millimeters of rain over Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Benguet, Zambales and Bataan.

The weather bureau also forecast 50 to 100 mm of rainfall over Metro Manila and several other areas on Tuesday, while warning that rainfall could be higher in mountainous and elevated areas and that impacts could be worsened by significant antecedent rainfall.
Pagasa said the habagat was expected to persist over Luzon and parts of the Visayas for the next five days.
