Indonesia suspends permits of six more companies over forest fires

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia suspended the permits of six additional companies over forest and land fires in Central Kalimantan, bringing the total number of sanctioned forestry firms to 32, Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni said.
"We have suspended the permits of the six companies I mentioned and ordered them to restore the ecosystem. This brings the total to 32 companies facing administrative sanctions in the forestry sector," Antoni said at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Antoni noted that the ministry previously imposed administrative sanctions on 26 companies, including permit suspensions and ecosystem restoration orders.
The six newly sanctioned companies had their Forest Utilization Business Permits (PBPH) suspended and were ordered to carry out environmental restoration across affected areas in Central Kalimantan.
The six firms hold concessions covering a total of 201,391 hectares, with 7,531 hectares burned during recent forest fires.
The affected firms are PT Hasil Kalimantan Jaya, PT Taiyong Engreen, PT Hutan Produksi Lestari, PT Ramang Agro Lestari, PT Puspa Warna Cemerlang, and PT Sinergi Hutan Sejati.
Total administrative sanctions now encompass 32 companies controlling 1,931,115 hectares of concessions, of which 18,489 hectares were affected by fires.
Antoni added that the companies could face separate criminal proceedings if investigations uncover evidence of criminal intent or wrongdoing.
"There remains the possibility that these companies could also face criminal proceedings if there are indications of criminal wrongdoing," he said.
