Some traditions are just too sweet to pass up. On the red carpet at her fourth annual Rare Impact Fund Benefit event at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles on Wednesday night (Oct. 14), Selena Gomez talked to Extra about how she marked her one-year anniversary with husband producer Benny Blanco, 38, last month.
Saying the low-key celebration was “so sweet,” Gomez, 34, said the couple “actually just ate a piece of cake and watched videos in our pajamas.” When asked what videos they watched, Gomez smiled, “The wedding videos! We’re so cheesy.”
The couple made it official on Sept. 27 last year in Santa Barbara, Calif. after two years of dating and on their anniversary this year Blanco posted a photo on Instagram of the traditional set-aside piece of wedding cake sitting on a pink plate with the phrase “LOVE IS LOVE” on it.
“Year old cake never tasted so good,” Blanco wrote in the caption, sharing another photo on his Story from the couple’s wedding ceremony, writing, “1 year down… forever to go…”
Blanco was unfamiliar with the cake-saving tradition until Gomez’s grandmother alerted him to it and he was totally down, except the piece they had on reserve had a few bites taken out of it already. You see, instead of one of those huge, multitiered wedding cakes, the couple decided to go for a small cake.
The only problem was that Gomez’s Only Murders in the Building co-star Martin Short thought it was a prop and he tucked into it on the sly. “He just ate it with his hand, and they had to put it back together,” Blanco revealed while co-hosting Today with Jenna & Sheinelle last month. So, instead of savoring the cake on their one-year anniversary, they only had six slices left this year.
“I hope you only have to eat it for the first year,” Blanco said. “I don’t want to be eating this thing on year six. I didn’t even wrap it correctly. It’s probably furry now.”
Wednesday night’s Rare Impact Fund benefit in support of increasing access to youth mental health services and education was hosted by Gomez and emceed by actor/comedian Sean Hayes and featured performances from Leon Bridges and Bella Kay.
