PH prepared to go solo in Melaka polls, says acting state PKR chief

Pakatan Harapan is prepared to contest the Melaka state election on its own if no formal negotiations with Barisan Nasional take place, says acting Melaka PKR chief Adam Adli.

Adam said the absence of negotiations had not affected PH’s preparations, and the coalition was ready to contest all the seats it had previously contested, Bernama reported.

“We must always be prepared because whether or not to negotiate is a matter of choice for each party. Every party has the right to make its own decisions.

“Even if we compete in all the seats we previously contested, it wouldn’t be an issue, as that was the case before,” he was quoted as saying after officiating the closing ceremony of the Kampung Angkat Madani programme in Melaka today.

Adam said political competition should not affect relations among communities in the state, noting that PH assemblymen had cooperated with the state government throughout the more than three years since the formation of the unity government.

“We want the people, especially the voters, not to view the election arena as a source of division.

“During the election period, we will indeed clash, fight and compete, but this should not affect relationships or harmony within the state,” he said.

The mandate of the Melaka government expires on Dec 31, after which a state election must be held within 60 days.

Both PH and Perikatan Nasional are looking to strike a pact with Barisan Nasional, which currently holds 20 of the 28 state seats.

PH and BN are allies at the federal level but their ties deteriorated after BN formed a pact with PN in the Negeri Sembilan election, resulting in a two-thirds majority win.
