Marvel needs to hurry up and bring this underrated team to the MCU. So far, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has shined the spotlight on some of the publisher’s biggest teams, such as the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Thunderbolts and the Eternals. The Fantastic Four recently joined the MCU, and the X-Men are on the horizon.
There is still another team that needs to make their MCU debut: the Midnight Sons. This loose, informal collection of supernatural and street-level heroes has existed in some form or another since the 1990s. The early part of that decade saw a resurgence of interest in magical and supernatural characters, like Ghost Rider, Blade and Morbius. Each of these magical anti-heroes were starring in their own books at the time, and thus it made sense to bring them together.
The Midnight Sons, with its rotating cast of characters, has become a fan-favorite. Nearly every member of the magical side of the Marvel Universe has been affiliated with the Sons, including Moon Knight. Currently, in the pages of Marc Spector: Moon Knight, the Fist of Khonshu has assembled a new incarnation of the Midnight Sons, consisting of Clea, Daredevil, Blade and Ghost Rider Robbie Reyes. Now, in a preview for Marc Spector: Moon Knight #9, the Sons show why they need to be in the MCU.
Moon Knight And The Midnight Sons Clean House, Literally
Marc Spector: Moon Knight #9 is written by Jed MacKay and drawn by Devmalya Pramanik. In a previous issue, Moon Knight and the Midnight Sons had liberated the victims of the evil, sentient house Mansion Ravenous. Rallying the survivors, as well as the Sons, Moon Knight assembles a new army: the Midnight Militia, and they return to Earth to stop the Mansion once and for all.
As the Midnight Sons fight their way through the Mansion, one thing becomes clear: they function like a well-oiled machine. Despite the vastly different personalities and methods used by the Midnight Sons, they manage to push them aside to work towards the common goal. The members of Moon Knight’s version of the Sons play off each other well, indicating Marc chose this team wisely. The preview ends with Clea and Moon Knight taking the fight to the heart of the Mansion Ravenous, with Marc seemingly ready to deliver the death blow.
Marvel Needs To Bring the Midnight Sons Into The MCU, And Soon
The Midnight Sons Could Be Another Guardians of the Galaxy-Level Success
The Midnight Sons need to be in the MCU, and soon. Given that the team has a very loose affiliation of members, any director and writer who tackles the Midnight Sons will have plenty of characters to draw from. The MCU has already introduced one version of Ghost Rider, with another on the way. Clea appeared in the post-credits scene of Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. The MCU was all set to introduce Blade, but Disney fumbled it so badly it was canceled. A Midnight Sons movie is the perfect place to try again.
And while many of Midnight Sons’ major players are already present and ready in the MCU, the film could still be a great launching pad for many more. There are plenty of magic-based characters left to be introduced into the MCU. In addition to giving Blade another shot of glory, other characters such as the Shroud or Hannibal King could appear as well.
An MCU-set Midnight Sons' movie would be a fan’s dream, and could be on par with Guardians of the Galaxy.
An MCU-set Midnight Sons' movie would be a fan’s dream, and could be on par with Guardians of the Galaxy. Guardians kicked open the door for more obscure characters to thrive on the big screen. Without it, fans never would have gotten Ant-Man, Shang-Chi or even Werewolf by Night. A Midnight Sons movie could help revitalize the MCU by further exploring its magical corner. Doctor Strange’s two MCU outings have shown this to be a fertile, and untapped, source of stories.
The Midnight Sons Can Make A Huge Impact On The MCU
The preview for Marc Spector: Moon Knight #9 gives the MCU pointers on how to depict the Midnight Sons. Most informal teams, like the Defenders, tend not to function well due to clashes of personalities, but the Midnight Sons show no signs of disarray. Instead, the Midnight Sons fight bravely, and their victory over the Mansion Ravenous is all but assured. The team’s amazing performance in the preview shows that they have the potential to be a major force in the MCU as well.
Marc Spector: Moon Knight #9 is on sale October 21 from Marvel Comics!
