Netflix Gives First Look At Charlie Brooker’s New Series ‘Blackmere’ As Rory Kinnear Joins Cast

He featured in the first ever Black Mirror and now Rory Kinnear has landed a role in Charlie Brooker’s next project for Netflix, an absurdist comedy newly titled Blackmere.

At a UK upfronts event this afternoon in London, Netflix unveiled first look at Blackmere alongside a trailer for Black Doves Season 2 and a new series starring Sarah Lancashire.

Blackmere is described as an “absurdist comedy disguised as an incredibly serious crime thriller.” It follows tormented detective John Blackmere, played by Paddy Considine, who leaves the rain-soaked Northern city of Bleakford for London to avenge his partner’s death and catch a ritualistic serial killer before they run out of victims.

Alongside Kinnear and Considine, Georgina Campbell and Lena Headey star in Blackmere, which is Brooker’s first Netflix project since Black Mirror. Kinnear starred in the iconic first ep of Black Mirror – when it was still on Channel 4 – as a fictional prime minister who was forced to perform a disgusting act with a pig. It set the tone for one of the most popular and disturbing British shows of the 21st century.

In a rare move, Blackmere is being produced by Netflix rather than a specific production company. Brooker created Blackmere and has written with Ben Caudell, Jason Hazeley, Emer Kenny, Daniel Maier and Joel Morris, with additional material by Victoria Asare Archer. Brooker is also executive producing alongside Black Mirror EPs Annabel Jones and Jessica Rhoades. Mark Kinsella is co-EP, Richard Webb is producer and Al Campbell is directing.

Blackmere will air early next year, a few weeks after Black Doves Season 2 starring Keira Knightley, Ben Whishaw and Lancashire, which launches November 5. Trailer for that one is below.
