House approves Bill on Labor Protection for enactment into law

Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) has approved the Bill on Labor Protection for enactment into law, advancing the process by around three weeks ahead of the deadline set by the Constitutional Court (MK).

Lawmakers endorsed the bill during the ninth plenary meeting of the House's first sitting period of the 2026-2027 parliamentary year at the Parliament Building in Jakarta on Tuesday.

"To all factions, shall we approve the bill for enactment into law?" the House Speaker Puan Maharani asked the session, drawing approval from legislators.

The approval complies with a ruling pronounced by the MK on October 31, 2024, requiring lawmakers to formulate a new law separating labor provisions from Law Number 6 of 2023 on Job Creation within two years.

Earlier in the meeting, Deputy Chair of Commission IX Putih Sari presented a report outlining the results of deliberations on the Bill on Labor Protection.

Sari said the bill had undergone intensive and comprehensive discussions, taking into account input from the public and relevant stakeholders through consultation and hearing sessions.

"Our working committee then examined the input received to develop a shared understanding of the realities on the ground," she said, adding the commission carefully considered proposals to reach common ground while accommodating various interests.

Sari noted the deliberations resulted in a bill comprising 23 chapters and 313 articles, describing it as part of efforts to build a national labor system that provides stronger protection while addressing the needs of both workers and employers.

The bill covers workers' fundamental rights, social security, employment status, occupational health and safety, and enhanced protection for vulnerable workers.

It also includes measures to expand employment opportunities and improve labor competency, productivity, and competitiveness.

Furthermore, the legislation regulates wage systems, industrial relations, layoffs, severance pay reserve funds, supervision, investigations, and criminal provisions.

Sari added the proposed law is also designed to respond to labor market dynamics and digital transformation while balancing labor rights, the investment climate, business sustainability, and job creation.
