Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on Wednesday in federal court in the Northern District of Texas. The filing lists more than $3.45 million in debts against $677,054 in assets. Over $2.1 million traces back to civil cases tied to a 2024 Dallas crash and an assault lawsuit from a former girlfriend. Rice, 26, is also playing out the last year of his rookie deal while hamstring and knee injuries limit him in practice. Kansas City has not said what comes next.

Rashee Rice Bankruptcy Filing Shows Debts From Crash Settlements And Lawsuits

Rice's assets include $421,825 in deferred compensation, his $160,000 Super Bowl LVIII ring, a $53,800 Mercedes-Benz, $5,000 in jerseys and hats, and a $3,500 apartment lease. Because Chapter 7 opens non-exempt property to creditors, one number matters most: $39,241 of his assets falls in that category.

His largest creditor is owed $979,837 from a settlement over the March 2024 crash. Rice was driving a Lamborghini Urus at 119 mph when he hit a median wall and triggered a collision with four other vehicles. Kathryn Kuykendall, who was riding in the struck Uber, agreed to a $1 million settlement in April 2025. Her attorney, Marc Lenahan, said the money never arrived on schedule. "As the first payment came due, we got the call that Rashee wasn't going to be able to pay. No money. Nil, as in, Rashee, how much money is in your bank account? Nil, no money."

Kansas City Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice has filed for bankruptcy, claiming $3.5 million in debts, most of it connected to civil litigation involving his high-speed crash in Texas and allegations of assault by a former girlfriend. The filing made Wednesday in Texas lists $677,054 in personal assets, including $421,825 in what is listed as deferred compensation. Rice is in the final year of a four-year rookie contract with a total value of $6.5 million and a 2026 base salary of $1.6 million. (Via AP)

Rice pleaded guilty to felony charges and received 30 days in jail and five years of probation. He served another 30 days this year after a positive marijuana test violated that probation. The NFL did not discipline him over the assault allegations. He is disputing other possible debts, including roughly $700,000 from crash victims and $200,000 tied to Dacoda Jones. She sought $1 million in her February 2026 lawsuit.

Kansas City Chiefs Contract Future For Rashee Rice Depends On Staying Healthy

Rice earns a $1.6 million base salary in 2026 on a four-year, $6.5 million rookie contract. Spotrac projects his market value at $37.2 million over two years. He has played five games this season, with 20 catches on 25 targets for 243 yards and two touchdowns. In 2023, he caught for 938 yards and seven scores as the Chiefs won the Super Bowl.

Bleacher Report's Moe Moton expects Kansas City to look elsewhere. "Rashee Rice has missed 24 games since the 2024 campaign. Xavier Worthy, a 2024 first-rounder, hasn't taken a third-year leap to become a well-rounded receiver," Moton noted. "The speedy wideout is averaging a career-low 8.5 yards per catch."

Moton pointed to Indianapolis Colts wideout Josh Downs as a priority for general manager Brett Veach. The Chiefs have made no decision on Rice's return, and he was still limited at practice on November 4.
