Asian Games 2026: Kumkum secures India’s first-ever individual recurve archery medal, beats Korean Oh Yejin to clinch gold
It was another day, another medal for archer Kumkum Anil Mohod, who scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman to win a recurve individual medal.
On Saturday at the Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Multipurpose Square, Kumkum took down Korea’s Oh Yejin 6-5 in the sudden death to win the gold medal. An Olympic quota provided the cherry on top.
It was Yejin who took the first set by a 29-27 scoreline.
Six back-to-back 10s from the relentless Kumkum ensured a tie for India in the second set before a perfect series helped the Maharashtra archer snatch the third set from the Korean stronghold.
A rare slip-up from Kumkum in the fourth set saw World No. 41 Yejin return to take a 5-3 lead.
Another perfect series from Kumkum triggered a sudden death, which saw the Korean falter to hit a low 8 off the first. Kumkum made the most of the opportunity, landing the arrow on the bullseye to seal a golden finish.
The Indian archer beat the reigning world champion Kang Chaeyoung of South Korea 6-4 in the quarterfinal before proceeding to take down the Chinese World Championship silver medallist Zhu Jingyi 6-2 in the semis.
