The concern centres on retail promotions commonly known as “Pensioners Day,” when many South African stores offer discounts timed to coincide with the first Tuesday of the grant payout. Jones’s comment suggests that shifting the payment date to a Wednesday, or off the usual Tuesday cycle altogether, could mean pensioners miss out on these savings entirely, a meaningful loss for grant recipients already stretching a fixed income across rising costs.
