Nicki Minaj addresses criticism over her support of Donald Trump: “I just love him”

Translate

Nicki Minaj has defended her support of President Donald Trump.

The rapper has become a vocal advocate for the US Republican Party over the past year, and recently appeared on Fox News’ The Ingraham Angle to discuss working with the Trump administration.

“I am honoured to be able to have an opportunity to work with this administration and to work with President Trump,” she said. “He has inspired many people, not just me. And he’s – he’s fun.”

“He’s not just smart, and, you know, he’s not just the president,” she continued. “But he’s also someone that I can relate to, someone that, you know, every time I see him, or every time I see him speaking to other people, he’s just himself. He’s very… he’s very grounded. It’s easy to connect with him. It’s easy to feel like he heard you; he understands you. And I just… I just love him. And I’m not going to ever make excuses for that.”

Host Laura Ingraham then asked Nicki if she had anything to “say to the critics of you for working with the sitting US President.”

“Absolutely nothing,” she quickly responded. “I don’t know why I should.”

Back in December, Minaj was the surprise guest at a Turning Point USA event, where she spoke with Erika Kirk – the widow of murdered political commentator Charlie Kirk. There, she declared “respect and admiration” for the “handsome, dashing” Trump and criticised California Governor Gavin Newsom.

She subsequently deactivated her Instagram account amid the backlash to her appearance and has faced multiple petitions to deport her from the US, having moved to the country from Trinidad when she was five.

She has since weighed in on UK politics, joining Azealia Banks in backing Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch back in May.

Also in May, she praised Elon Musk, thanking the divisive billionaire for “everything you’re doing for humanity” during an ultimately axed SpaceX rocket launch.
