Mark Wahlberg's record-breaking action franchise has been resurrected as a global streaming sensation, almost a year after it ended. Some of Wahlberg's best movies are from the action genre, with a number of highlights across his career. This includes the war drama Lone Survivor, based on a true story during the Afghanistan War, and Shooter, a thriller where he takes on the role of a veteran framed for murder. Many of his action movies carry a serious tone. However, there's one duology of films that balances its action with a more comedic slant.

Said movies are The Family Plan and The Family Plan 2. Released on Apple TV in 2023 and 2025 respectively, the movies follow Wahlberg as car salesman Dan Morgan, who is secretly a former assassin. He's built a life for himself with his wife and three children, but is pulled back into the world of assassins when a group of people begin to come after him and his family. The duology balances humor and action, with both movies performing well upon their initial releases.

Wahlberg's Family Plan Franchise Is Back As An Apple TV Hit

Now, The Family Plan duology is back as two major streaming hits on Apple TV, earning recognition from audiences around the world. According to data from September 23, 2026, The Family Plan is Number 9 on the platform worldwide, while The Family Plan 2 is Number 10 globally. The majority of both movies' success is international, landing in the Top 10 for dozens of countries around the world. The franchise's success comes just weeks after the release of Wahlberg's more serious crime thriller, By Any Means.

It's also a surprise considering the unfortunate record the two movies hold. Collectively, the two films are Wahlberg's worst-reviewed action franchise. The Family Plan reviews from critics and audiences alike aren't very good, the movie holding a 27% critic score and 59% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It's just as negative for The Family Plan 2, which has a 28% critic score and much lower 33% audience score on the platform. And yet, the movies appear to be resonating on a global scale despite initially being panned.

Will The Franchise Return?

As of writing, there's no indication The Family Plan 3 will come to pass. Wahlberg's only upcoming movies next year are the sports comedy-drama Weekend Warriors and crime thriller The Big Fix, where he'll portray real-life police officer Chris Eaton. He's also set to lend his voice to Ted: The Animated Series, though there's no word yet on when the show will arrive. His busy schedule indicates no immediate plans for a sequel, bolstered by the first two movies' poor critical reception.

However, despite the original movie getting poor reviews, Apple still greenlit a sequel because of how well it performed on streaming. Although there's no guarantee a third movie will happen, the franchise's success on a global scale could aid in its continuation. For now, however, there are no plans for it to keep going, but that doesn't negate the global streaming success it's now enjoying.
