Optimus Prime: Awakening Is A Sequel To The Transformers: The Movie

Hasbro's decision to release Optimus Prime: Awakening with an anniversary of The Transformers: The Movie proved to be quite purposeful. This short effectively acts as a companion piece or sequel to the 1986 animated movie. This is done by beginning the short with a recreation of Optimus' death in The Transformers: The Movie.

The animated story takes viewers back to Optimus' last moments alive in the 1986 film, telling Ultra Magnus to take the Matrix of Leadership and keep it safe until another Autobot emerges who will "light our darkest hour." This allows Ultra Magnus, Hot Rod, Arcee, Kup, and Perceptor to be returning Transformers in Optimus Prime: Awakening.

While The Transformers: The Movie ended Optimus' story here (with the animated series reviving him later on), Awakening shows what the Autobot leader experienced in death. The short revolves around him in the afterlife as he speaks to The One and attempts to be revived so he can keep protecting the Matrix, Cybertron, and Earth.

The connections to Hasbro's franchise don't end there. Optimus Prime: Awakening references the wider Transformers multiverse that the Autobot hero exists in. The One mentions that Optimus has had "many forms" across "many realities." To emphasize this point, Optimus Prime: Awakening shows clips from several Transformers movies and shows to shine a spotlight on the character's rich history.

There are multiple clips from The Transformers animated show before The One even gets to the multiversal references. From there, the short includes a shot of Optimus flying in 2007's series Transformers Animated. He's then seen firing his ion blaster into the sky during a moment from Transformers: Prime.

Awakening then spotlights Optimus Prime's movie history. A flash of Optimus Prime from the end of Michael Bay's 2007 Transformers is included to show off his live-action appearances. There is also a glimpse of Optimus in the 2013 movie Transformers Prime Beast Hunters: Predacons Rising.
