Pat McAfee had another chance to bring his loud, free-flowing style to NFL fans, but his first Monday Night Football alt-cast struggled to attract viewers. The ESPN2 broadcast aired during the San Francisco 49ers' Week 6 game against the Washington Commanders on October 19, 2026. McAfee hosted the show with NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky and other members of his team, offering an alternative to the regular game coverage. The audience numbers fell below those of competing broadcasts, raising questions about the appeal of ESPN's latest addition to its Monday night lineup.

Pat McAfee's alt-cast draws low viewership

The “Field Pass with The Pat McAfee Show” attracted 351,000 viewers on ESPN2, according to The Athletic's Andrew Marchand. ESPN declined to confirm the figure, which Marchand described as an unusual move by the network.

NFL Network's “Next Gen Stats” broadcast performed better, drawing 469,000 viewers, according to Sports Business Journal reporter Austin Karp. That gave the analytics-focused show an advantage of 118,000 viewers over McAfee's debut.

The numbers fell short of the audience for Peyton and Eli Manning's “ManningCast.” The brothers attracted 705,000 viewers during their Week 1 broadcast and 661,000 in Week 2. However, the two alternative broadcasts did not compete directly on the same night, as ESPN scheduled McAfee's show for weeks when the Manning brothers were off.

The gap prompted fans to question whether ESPN had given McAfee too much airtime. His daily show, College GameDay appearances and expanded Monday Night Football role have made him a regular presence across the network.

Fans question ESPN's growing reliance on McAfee

Several viewers took to X after the figures emerged, suggesting that McAfee's frequent appearances might be wearing thin with audiences.

Pat McAfee's first MNF alt-cast had 351K viewers, according to a source. That is around half of what the Mannings have received. ESPN declined to confirm the McAfee numbers, which is not common practice.

“America has McAfee fatigue. His employer just hasn't figured it out,” one fan wrote.

Another viewer complained about ESPN featuring him so often, writing, “People are f***ing tired of this guy. Just like ESPN to oversaturate the network with him.”

The reaction came as ESPN continued to back McAfee. The network added him to Monday Night Countdown in August, expanding his role beyond his existing show and College GameDay duties.

ESPN executive Mike Foss recently praised McAfee at the Front Office Sports Tuned In summit, calling him “generational.” Foss highlighted his interviewing skills and ability to obtain information through his contacts. McAfee's alt-cast has performed better in college football. His most-watched edition, featuring Ohio State against Oregon on New Year's Day in 2025, attracted 2.4 million viewers, according to The Athletic.

ESPN has scheduled five more regular-season Monday Night Football alt-casts for McAfee, with the next set for November 9, when the Buffalo Bills visit the Minnesota Vikings. His show is also scheduled to appear during Super Bowl LXI on February 14, 2027.
