Minister stresses social dialogue, protection for ASEAN workers

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Manpower Minister Yassierli stressed the importance of social dialogue, cross-border social protection, and lifelong learning in facing manpower challenges in Southeast Asia.
Yassierli mentioned in a statement received here on Friday that the three elements are an important part of efforts to protect workers’ rights amid global economic turmoil.
According to him, global economic turmoil demands cooperation among parties and countries to build shared capacity to face economic change.
"We cannot face global economic turbulence alone. We need to work together to build our shared capacity. The Indonesian government will always be ready to be an open and supportive partner in dialogue with the trade union movement," Yassierli said.

Meanwhile, the minister also attended the ASEAN Trade Union Council (AseanTUC) Regional Consultation Workshop in Jakarta recently.
On that occasion, he affirmed government support for discussing various manpower issues raised by the AseanTUC, including efforts to safeguard workers’ basic rights in Southeast Asia.
"The government supports the results of the discussion on key issues raised by the AseanTUC. We appreciate AseanTUC’s active role and firm stance in safeguarding workers’ basic rights in Southeast Asia," Yassierli said.
He also stressed that freedom of association is a basic right of workers that is important for building healthy and fair employment relations. That right is part of the human rights guaranteed by the constitution and international conventions, he added.

"We certainly welcome the presence of the AseanTUC headquarters in Jakarta. We believe this step will further strengthen strategic coordination and collaboration between the government and the trade union movement in the Southeast Asia region," he said.
