DOTr approves jeepney fare hikes effective Monday (Sept. 28)

MANILA, Philippines—The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has approved fare increases for public utility vehicles (PUVs), with the new rates taking effect on Monday, Sept. 28.

Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez approved the recommendation of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to lift the suspension of the fare increase, which was imposed in March 2026.

“It is timely to implement this fare increase to also ensure that there are enough PUVs on the roads and that commuters have available transportation,” Lopez said.

Under the approved fare adjustments, the minimum fare for traditional jeepneys will increase from P13 to P14 for the first four kilometers, with an additional P2 for every succeeding kilometer.

For modern jeepneys, the minimum fare will increase from P15 to P17, with an additional P2.40 for every succeeding kilometer.

Lopez reminded PUV operators to continue honoring the mandatory 20 percent fare discount for students, senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

PUVs covered by the fare adjustment must also display the new fare matrix inside their units before charging passengers the updated fares.

The DOTr and LTFRB consulted the transport groups before approving the fare adjustment.

“We really just need to strike a balance in whatever decision the agency makes. You are our top priority in all the programs we implement at the DOTr,” the transport chief said.

The approval came as several transport groups announced plans to stage a three-day transport strike from Sept. 28 to Sept. 30. /apl
