Netflix's 95% RT Fantasy Time Travel Series Is So Good, It's Getting A Spinoff After One Season

Netflix’s 95% Rotten Tomatoes fantasy time-travel series was one of the best romance K-dramas of 2025, and less than a year after its release, the streamer has reportedly decided to capitalize on the show’s popularity by developing it into a franchise. Fantasy is one of the most difficult genres to get right. More often than not, fantasy TV shows are cut down before they can find their footing. So understandably, when a series in the genre garners audience and critical acclaim, streaming platforms and networks tend to take advantage.
Korean broadcaster tvN's Bon Appétit, Your Majesty easily won over global critics, earning an impressive 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes, while finding a substantial international audience on Netflix, resulting in 44.1 million views between 2025 and 2026. On its original network, it was one of the most-watched K-dramas in South Korea in 2025 (via What's On Netflix). In the series, a talented chef in modern-day France is invited to work at a Michelin-starred restaurant before being suddenly stranded in the Joseon Dynasty in Korea, where she ends up cooking in the royal kitchens of a tyrannical king.
The show's combination of critical praise and popularity is particularly impressive for a K-drama built around such an unusual concept. However, the most surprising sign of the show's success is what Netflix is reportedly doing next. It seems Netflix is looking to expand the property with a new spinoff series set in the same universe (Netflix has yet to confirm). As this news was recently announced, there isn’t substantial information about the spinoff's plot, release date, or its cast. However, with the popularity of Bon Appétit, Your Majesty, and K-dramas in general on Netflix, the streamer undoubtedly wants to get it ready for audience consumption as soon as possible.
Netflix's Growing Bon Appétit, Your Majesty Franchise Explained
With a Bon Appétit, Your Majesty spinoff, the producers are turning what was initially presented as a standalone historical fantasy romance into the beginnings of a larger franchise. The original series, starring Lim Yoon-a as chef Yeon Ji Yeong and Lee Chae-min as King Lee Heon, became a major success after its Netflix debut in August 2025. That popularity is now being used as the foundation for a new series set within the same universe.
According to What’s on Netflix, the upcoming project is being developed as a separate story with a new cast, meaning Lim Yoon-a and Lee Chae-min are not expected to return as their original characters. Instead, The WONDERfools star Cha Eun Woo has reportedly been offered the male lead. At present, specific plot details have not been revealed, but the site claims that the new series will share the same universe while introducing a brand-new story and cast.
Cha Eun Woo's potential casting is particularly significant because it could give the franchise an immediate connection to Netflix's rapidly growing Korean drama audience. Production for the Bon Appétit, Your Majesty spinoff is also still some way off. Cha Eun Woo is expected to complete his mandatory military service in January 2027, meaning filming for the new series is likely to begin sometime in 2027 if the current plans remain unchanged. With no confirmed release date or detailed synopsis yet, the project remains in its early stages.
A Bon Appétit, Your Majesty Spinoff Is Better Than Getting A Season 2
Most Korean dramas tell self-contained stories that get resolved by the end of the season. As such, not many return for a second, third, or even fourth installment, except for a few shows, which is usually a good thing. Squid Game season 1, for instance, was a masterpiece, while its second and third seasons weren’t as good.
Considering that the central conflict of Bon Appétit, Your Majesty has already been resolved, forcing the same characters into another major conflict could make season 2 feel artificial. A spinoff avoids that problem. The original characters can keep their ending while the franchise moves forward with fresh protagonists. (It's rumored that the spinoff will focus on an Italian-trained chef).
Additionally, a second season of Bon Appétit, Your Majesty would inevitably be compared with the first season. Audiences would expect the same level of chemistry and potentially the same type of story. A spinoff has much more freedom. New characters can have different personalities, relationships, and conflicts while still delivering the elements that made the original TV show popular.
The most exciting thing about Bon Appétit, Your Majesty, isn't necessarily one specific character. It's the combination of food, time travel, Joseon-era politics, fantasy, and unexpected romance. Those ingredients can be reused in countless ways. A new protagonist could arrive in the historical period under completely different circumstances, or the show could even visit a different era of Korean history, allowing the franchise to explore another corner of its world without repeating the original plot. Anything could happen next.
