Kaizer Chiefs have congratulated club legend Doctor Khumalo following his appointment as vice-chairperson of the South African Football Association’s (SAFA) Technical Committee.

The former Amakhosi midfielder will serve under chairperson Jack Maluleke after his appointment was confirmed at a meeting of SAFA’s National Executive Committee in Sandton, Johannesburg, last Sunday.

‘Happy to serve on the committee’

SAFA president Danny Jordaan confirmed that Doctor Khumalo had accepted the role, saying he was happy to serve on the committee.

Khumalo visited the club’s Naturena headquarters on Wednesday, where he spent time with chairman Dr Kaizer Motaung and interacted with the first-team coaching staff and players.

Speaking about his new responsibilities, Khumalo expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute his experience to South African football.

“I am grateful to have been added to the SAFA committee and I am hoping to add value via my experience. Thanks to the Chiefs Chairman for hosting me and imparting his wisdom as I take on this new role,” Khumalo said.

Motaung also congratulated Doctor Khumalo, highlighting the knowledge and experience he brings to the football structures.

“Doctor is very knowledgeable in the game. He will take all that he has developed in a career spanning over many years as a player and coach with him to the SAFA structures. We wish him well and are hoping to have a longer session with him in the next couple of weeks,” Motaung said.

A lasting legacy at Kaizer Chiefs

Khumalo remains one of the most celebrated figures in Kaizer Chiefs’ history, having spent more than 15 years with the club.

During his time at Naturena, he made over 400 appearances and won 21 titles, establishing himself as a key figure in the club’s history.

His achievements also extended to the international stage. Khumalo made his Bafana Bafana debut in 1992, scoring against Cameroon in a 1-0 victory, before playing an important role in South Africa’s 1996 Africa Cup of Nations triumph.

His appointment to SAFA’s Technical Committee offers another opportunity for the former midfielder to put his football experience to use.
