Doctor Who star's "enthralling" drama gets new teaser as first UK screening is confirmed

Apple TV has unveiled a new teaser trailer for its upcoming drama Being Heumann. Based on real-life events, the film tells the story of Judith Heumann as she leads the charge for anti-discrimination laws towards disabled people in the 1970s.

"They wouldn't take Judy Heumann's phone calls, so she took their building. In 1977, a young disabled woman and a scrappy coalition of outsiders decide they've had enough," reads the synopsis.

"What begins as one impulsive act becomes the longest occupation of a federal building in American history, as hundreds spontaneously seize government offices and refuse to leave until the bureaucrat in their way takes action."

"Bringing rebellion in all its forms to the hallowed halls, a movement's accidental leaders struggle to find their path forward where none has ever been paved for them," it concludes.

The film is directed and co-written by Siân Heder, with Doctor Who star Ruth Madeley in the leading role. The teaser trailer sees her facing off against the bureaucratic antagonist (played by Mark Ruffalo), in order to change the lives of millions.

"They see you in front of the stairs and they think that you're the problem. The stairs are the problem!" Judy declares in an impassioned speech.

We then see wheelchair user Judy travelling on the road, in front of a bus having been unable to board. As the driver beeps their horn, Judy holds her middle finger up in protest, continuing her journey at her own pace.

Being Heumann will debut at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on 10 September, before its European premiere at the 70th BFI London Film Festival (LFF) on 12 October.

Described as "enthralling" by LFF, the drama also stars Madeline Delp, Dylan O'Brien and Rob Delaney. It marks the second collaboration for Apple Original Films and Academy Award-winning filmmaker Heder, following the success of CODA.
