‘My Grandmother is an NPP Founding member’ – Ekua Amoakoh reveals family’s NPP roots

Spokesperson for NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Health Committee, Dr Ekua Amoakoh, has revealed that her grandmother was a founding member of the party and served as one of its early treasurers in the Ashanti Region.

Speaking in a personality profile interview on JoyNews’ PM Express with Emefa Adeti, Dr Amoakoh said she spent considerable time with her grandmother while growing up and learnt a great deal from her.

She described her grandmother as a politician who played a role in the NPP’s early organisation.

“My grandma is a founding member of the NPP. She was one of the first people to be treasurer in Ashanti Region. She is a council of elders—like she is,” she said.

Dr Amoakoh said she spent much of her childhood with her grandmother, particularly when her mother enrolled at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) to pursue further qualifications.

She recounted the period humorously, suggesting that her mother’s studies gave her more time with her grandmother.

“I spent a lot of time with my grandmother. And I think I learned a lot of things from her,” she said.

Her account offers a glimpse into the family relationships that influenced her upbringing and her later involvement in politics.

Dr Amoakoh’s account places her grandmother’s political involvement among the family experiences that preceded her own work with the NPP.

The party was established in 1992 and draws from Ghana’s Danquah-Busia-Dombo political tradition.

Her grandmother’s reported role as an early treasurer in the Ashanti Region points to a family association with the party dating back to its formative years.

Dr Amoakoh also spoke about growing up at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, where her grandmother worked as Director of Nursing.

She said her parents encouraged her to study medicine, although she initially resisted the decision and questioned her choice even after entering medical school.

She has since come to appreciate the experience and the discipline it instilled in her.

“I'm glad they insisted because even if it's not something you are going to practice or something you are going to use, that whole process of training, I think it can forge any person into a formidable person,” she said.

Dr Amoakoh’s interview on PM Express explored her childhood, family background and the experiences that helped shape her career in medicine and politics.
