Dolly Parton’s ‘9 to 5’ Returns to Theaters With Ticket Sales Donated to Dollywood Foundation After Star’s Death

Dolly Parton‘s hit 1980 comedy “9 to 5” will return to theaters next month for one week in the wake of the country superstar’s death on Aug. 25 at age 80. All U.S. ticket sales will be donated to The Dollywood Foundation to support its flagship program, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

“9 to 5” will be back in theaters from Oct. 9-15. Disney made the announcement on Sept. 25, aka the new annual “Give Like Dolly Day.” The celebration, an homage to the film’s title, encourages people around the world to make a difference in a child’s life and honor Parton’s lifelong mission of inspiring kids to “dream more, learn more, care more and be more.” Since it was founded in 1995, Parton’s Imagination Library has donated more than 300 million books to children around the world, and each month it sends out 3 million books directly to kids’ homes. Children who are enrolled receive one book per month from birth to age five, at no cost to families.

Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda co-star in “9 to 5” with Parton as a group of female office workers. There’s “the all-knowing manager who trained the boss but can’t get promoted (Tomlin), a befuddled newcomer (Fonda) and an alluring personal secretary everyone presumes is having an affair (Parton) – [who] all band together to seek revenge on the man who is making their lives miserable,” the logline reads.

The film was directed by Colin Higgins and produced by Bruce Gilbert from a screenplay by Higgins and Patricia Resnick. It received an Academy Award nomination for Parton’s iconic title song.

Countless Hollywood celebrities, music stars and fans mourned Parton after her death last month. Fonda paid tribute to her, writing: “Let’s be grateful for all that she has left us to ease our sadness now. I never knew anyone like her. She was simultaneously a naughty, playful southern gal from the hollows of Tennessee and a deep, soulful thinker who could see through people right down to their true selves. She was many things…lyricist, songstress, player of many instruments, writer, prankster, visionary, loyal friend, who’d never go to bed before she and her friends had laughed so hard they’d have to cross their legs.”
