A woman who was charged after a newborn was found dead in a wooded area in Halifax this spring has been released on bail.
Ramandeep Kaur, 27, appeared in Halifax provincial court on Thursday morning to seek release on bail.
Kaur, wearing a red sweatshirt that said "perfectionist," participated in the court proceedings with assistance from a Punjabi interpreter.
Judge Marc Chisholm granted Kaur's release on conditions that she reside with her surety at an address in Halifax, that she remain in Nova Scotia, that she report to Halifax Regional Police in person each week, that she attend court when directed, and that she deposit her passport and Indian national identity card. On May 22, a 23-year-old woman who had recently given birth was admitted to the hospital in critical condition, but the baby was not with her.
Police conducted an extensive search, and the remains of the infant were found off Old Coach Road in Goodwood, N.S., two days later.
On May 27, the baby’s mother — a relative of Singh’s — died in hospital. Police have said it appeared her condition when she was admitted was a medical one and not the result of violence.
Singh remains in custody.
Kaur and Singh are scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court on Oct. 14.
