The Phone Checklist to Complete Before Arriving in Egypt

The first message after landing in Egypt may be from a driver asking which exit you are using, or a relative checking when you will be home. Either way, it helps if your phone is ready for the trip. Finding an address or opening a booking should be straightforward, especially after a long flight.

Whether you are visiting for the first time or returning to see family, a little preparation before departure makes the first few hours easier. Save the information you will need, work out how you will get online, and make sure the important details are available even when your connection is not.

Save the journey from the airport

Start with the place you are actually going. Save the full accommodation address, its location on a map, and a contact number. If possible, ask your host for the address in Arabic as well. A hotel name alone can be unhelpful when a property has several branches or a rental apartment is inside a larger building.

For a prearranged transfer, confirm the arrival terminal and meeting point with the operator. If you plan to use Uber at Cairo International Airport, follow the pickup directions in the app after requesting your ride. Instructions depend on the terminal; an old screenshot from someone else’s trip may send you to the wrong place.

Returning to family? Share your flight number before takeoff and agree where you will meet. Send your arrival message once you can give a useful update, including any delay at baggage claim. Keep the address saved even if you expect someone to collect you.

Keep bookings together for the whole trip

An Egypt itinerary can involve a hotel in Cairo, a flight south, and a Nile cruise with a separate meeting point. Put those confirmations in one folder on your phone, with a short note showing the date, operator, and contact for each leg. Give downloaded files names you will recognize without opening all of them.

For Luxor or Aswan, confirm the exact boarding or pickup location with the cruise company. If a transfer is included, save its instructions alongside the cruise booking. On a Red Sea stay, do the same for the hotel transfer and any boat excursion: the resort address and the departure point may be different.

Keep museum and tour confirmations within easy reach too. Follow each operator’s instructions for presenting tickets; a screenshot may be useful as a backup, but it is not a substitute where a live ticket or original document is required.

Choose mobile data around your holiday

Check what your usual mobile plan charges for use in Egypt before leaving home. If it already includes a suitable allowance, you may need very little else. If it does not, a prepaid eSIM lets you buy a set amount of mobile data without swapping a physical SIM card, provided your phone supports it.

Choose a validity period that covers the whole stay, even if you expect to use little data.

Check the phone and install before departure

Check your exact phone model and whether it is unlocked for another provider’s eSIM. On an iPhone, Apple’s guidance explains where to find the Carrier Lock setting. If you need your carrier to unlock the device, sort that out before traveling.

Use reliable Wi-Fi to follow Horizon’s eSIM installation guide. On supported phones, the install link opens the device’s setup flow; QR and manual details are available as alternatives. Read the selected package’s activation instructions and first-use deadline before installing, because the validity start rule can vary.

When it is time to use the plan, select the travel eSIM for mobile data and follow its roaming instructions.

Keep data roaming off on your home line unless you intend to use it. If you leave that line active for ordinary calls or texts, check your carrier’s charges; using a travel eSIM for data does not remove them.

Download the things you will need away from Wi Fi
Save maps for the areas you plan to visit, where downloads are available. Google Maps’ offline guidance explains the limits: downloaded areas can help with driving navigation, but offline use does not provide walking or public transit directions, or live traffic information. Keep written pickup instructions and addresses as well.

Download an Arabic language pack if your translation app supports it. Before leaving Wi-Fi, test that your saved bookings and notes open without a connection. This is especially useful before a day on the Nile, a boat outing, or a long transfer when reception may change along the route.

Download entertainment before departure too, and leave large photo backups for Wi-Fi. That keeps more of your allowance available for the things you need while out. If you share data with a companion, Horizon includes free hotspot use, but both devices draw from the same package.

Make one last check before you leave

Charge your phone and power bank, make space for photos, and sign in to the travel apps you plan to use.

Complete any account verification while you still have access to your usual number. Write down your first address and one useful contact separately from the phone, so a flat battery does not leave you without them.
