Colleen Hoover's thriller Verity has officially broken a record.
Hoover is a New York Times bestselling author who transitioned from a self-published writer to a global phenomenon, with her books taking over Hollywood. She wrote her debut novel, titled Slammed, in 2012, which unexpectedly launched her career, leading to viral successes such as It Ends With Us, Regretting You, and Verity. Now, the author is heading to Hollywood once again as another popular novel is getting the adaptation treatment.
The 2018 thriller novel Verity has landed in theaters after topping the New York Times bestseller list. While Hoover is deemed a bit divisive in her novels and now with the adaptations, it appears that streak won't die any time soon, as her latest movie has divided audiences and critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Verity has officially hit the lowest audience rating of the author's adaptations, with a score of 71% based on over 250 reviews. This is the lowest compared to the three other releases across two years.

The audience and critic divide across Hoover adaptations is an ongoing streak as the loyal fanbase, who call themselves CoHorts, continue to hype the movies while critics are often underwhelmed. Audience reviews for Verity include: "If you want a thrill you don’t expect, this is it. The plot developed in a direction I was looking for, but didn’t see coming. Well done, worth the watch," while others stated, "Lacked the excitement, and the build up. Was boring and missing so much from the book. Also disliked the voice Anne used for Verity."
Critics were far less generous and in the reviews for Verity said, "Colleen Hoover’s attempt at a Gone Girl narrative when not being dull is setting you up for a series of even more ridiculous twists, none of which tie together with any competency even by the craziest standards of trashy Housemaid-like thrillers." ScreenRant's Liz Declan stated that the Hoover adaptation "brings a star-studded cast to a story that is at once sexy, disturbing, and actually terrifying."
Verity is currently in theaters and is projected to earn a three-day total of $33.6 million, beating other releases such as Digger and Zach Cregger's Resident Evil. It is the best domestic debut for any Hoover adaptation. While it may be impressing at the box office, the movie remains one of the worst rated on Rotten Tomatoes.
Verity is available to watch in theaters now.
