I remember where I was when I played every Mass Effect game. In fact, I played them all in review sessions, so I was completely isolated from any concurrent fan reactions. When I finished Mass Effect 3, I was confused about how the conclusion could be wrapped up so messily, but I wasn't prepared for the onslaught of fan feedback that followed.
All the while, fans are still attached to the N7 universe. Mass Effect 2 is a fantastic standalone sci-fi opera adventure; the original game is still very accessible, and the third entry has plenty of high points. Now, you can try out the Spectre Expansion, which adds eight new worlds to the game.
Live on Nexus Mods, you can find the Spectre Expansion now for Mass Effect. What this mod essentially does is add more lore, expands the galaxy map, and adds more content as part of the Spectre Expansion Mod series.
Here is everything that awaits you with the Spectre Expansion:
- By default, the Arcturus Stream and Petra Nebula are unlocked.
- An additional 8 clusters can be unlocked via the Baria Frontiers store in the Lower Markets of the Citadel Wards.
- Explore the home systems of the Asari, Turians, Salarians, Volus, Elcor, Hanar, Krogan and Batarians.
- Expanded collection assignments, with more opportunities to collect Salarian ID tags, Prothean Data Disks, Matriarch Writings, Turian Insignias and Valuable Minerals.
- New collection assignment: Alliance Black Boxes — scour alien home systems for covert Alliance spy drones.
- Randomised squadmate mentions during DISCOVERY popups based on who is currently in the party (no more only mentioning Tali!).
- Restored content: Mars' moon Phobos restored.
- Immersive update: Altahe's Roche twin Ontahe now visible on the galaxy map
Eight clusters await you with new adventures, including the home systems of multiple classic races from the series. Collection assignments have been expanded upon, as well as more squadmate chatter that diversifies the lines a bit.
All you need is the LE1 Community Patch for sideloader functionality. So far, reviews are positive: "Just finished a 100% completion run with this mod installed and I'm really impressed. The additions feel like vanilla content in regards of quality and really enhance the lore/immersion. Great stuff."
As of August, the creator noted that updates are still planned, but the team prefers to work on "substantial updates" rather than smaller ones, especially since "the mod is stable" currently. Right now, Version 0.5.1 is the latest edition and contains some typo fixes, as well as a fix for a bug where Shepard's lines wouldn't play on one occasion.
If you haven't booted up Mass Effect in a while, it's never really a bad time. BioWare seems hard at work on the next iteration of Mass Effect now, but even if it doesn't pan out, you still have the trilogy.
