3 kids, 85-year-old woman die in Isabela blast


ROXAS, Isabela — An 8-year-old boy died and five others, including his 85-year-old grandmother, were injured when an alleged improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in Sitio Raniag, Barangay Sinamar, on Sunday morning, authorities said.
According to the police, the boy’s grandmother and three other minors, all residents of the village, were wounded in the explosion. They were brought to the Manuel A. Roxas District Hospital for treatment.
Witnesses said they heard a loud explosion and later saw the victims lying on the ground. The boy, a Grade 3 pupil who sustained serious injuries, was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

Police have yet to determine the type of explosive device involved.

Personnel from the Roxas-Mallig Plains Satellite Forensic Office and the Provincial Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Canine Unit were processing the blast site and gathering evidence.
Witnesses told police that the children had been playing with a metallic object believed to be an improvised explosive device shortly before it detonated.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the origin of the device and how it came into the children’s possession. /mcm
