Taqueria Sin Nombre
This venue is included in Good Food’s 100 Essential Restaurants list.
It’s ironic that this restaurant feels like a chapel, given the jolt it gave Mexican dining in Melbourne when it opened. Clusters of flowers and candles sit on the dusky pink tiles of the bar, around which 16 diners perch facing the open kitchen.
Its centrepiece is the trompo, a vertical spit stacked wide and tall with pineapple-brushed pork. Fatty yet crisp slices are shaved off for al pastor tacos on house-made tortillas. Meatier hunks go into the quesadilla-like gringa filled with oozy Oaxacan cheese. Kangaroo asada could be a new Mexican-Australian specialty, but plenty of established dishes appear on the menu, from tuna tostadas to fried fish tacos made with barramundi.
Around you, diners might capture content “moments” between bites, such is the allure of this laneway restaurant, unmarked apart from its constant line. Persevere to experience a venue that’s both viral and vital.
Good to know: Lines tend to form before the restaurant opens, but tables usually dine for an hour or less.
