“Cagliari Calcio announces that, following reports that emerged in the Italian media in recent hours, Daniel Maldini underwent toxicology tests. All tests carried out returned negative results,” the club said on Monday morning.

“The player will regularly join the squad this afternoon as the team resumes training ahead of their upcoming fixture.”

Maldini was involved in a car crash in Milan on Sunday morning, hours after the Serie A match between the Sardinians and Atalanta in Bergamo, in which he had scored the winner from the spot.

The 24-year-old striker had his driving licence confiscated after failing a breathalyser test. According to various sources, including Gazzetta, the Italian striker had also failed a preliminary test for drug use.

Cagliari, however, insist that checks their striker underwent after the accident returned negative.

The crash happened at Piazza Caneva in Milan at around 5:15 on Sunday morning. Maldini was driving his Porsche Carrera but reportedly failed to give way to a Volkswagen Golf.

Police and ambulances arrived at the scene, but luckily, none of the people involved reported severe injuries.
