Miley Cyrus’ Bass Persuades Suffers Biggest Chart Drop Ever After No. 1 Debut

Translate

Miley Cyrus’ Bass Persuades made history with its No. 1 debut, but not in the way she might have hoped.

After topping the Billboard 200 chart upon release last week, her 10th studio album has tumbled to No. 157 this week. According to Variety, that makes it the biggest second-week drop for a full-length release that debuted at the summit.

There have technically been steeper falls from No. 1, although neither came immediately after an album’s chart debut. Bon Jovi’s This House Is Not for Sale dropped from No. 1 to No. 169 in 2018 after returning to the top nearly two years after its release. Similarly, Travis Scott’s Days Before Rodeo disappeared completely from the Billboard 200 after reaching No. 1 in its fourth week.

That leaves Cyrus with a more specific distinction, because no album that debuted at No. 1 has fallen farther in its second week.

Bass Persuades earned Cyrus her first No. 1 album in nearly 13 years. According to Billboard, it opened with 61,000 equivalent album units in the United States during the week ending Sept. 24 and became her sixth project to lead the chart and first since 2013’s Bangerz.

Its opening tally leaned particularly heavily on sales. Of those 61,000 units, 47,000 came from album sales while 14,000 were streaming-equivalent units representing 14.22 million on-demand official streams.

The album arrived Sept. 18 as Cyrus’ first release for Atlantic Records and her first under the Miley mononym. Its title track also debuted at No. 35 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming her 24th Top 40 entry.

Despite the album’s dramatic second-week descent, demand to see Miley in person appears to be moving in the other direction. She is scheduled to play two sold-out shows at the Hollywood Bowl on Oct. 16 and 18, marking her first public concerts in four years. More than 1.5 million people registered for the presale, according to Hollywood Bowl organizers.
