Brazilian President Lula Shares Version of Bad Bunny’s Puerto Rico Protest Song Amid US Tensions

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has turned to Bad Bunny for his latest reelection campaign message.

Lula took to X to share a video featuring a Portuguese-language adaptation of “LO QUE LE PASÓ A HAWAii,” the DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS protest song centered on Puerto Rican identity. According to Brazilian news outlet G1 (Globo), Bad Bunny’s team authorized the campaign’s use of the song.

Lula has increasingly emphasized Brazilian sovereignty as of late amid tensions with the United States ahead of October’s local election. As Reuters reported earlier this week, the Brazilian president used his address to the United Nations General Assembly to warn against foreign interference in the vote, declaring that “Brazil is nobody’s backyard.”

His main challenger, Flávio Bolsonaro, met with Trump earlier this year and has highlighted support from other right-wing leaders abroad, while Lula has accused opposing candidates of aligning themselves with foreign interests.

Lula made the message more explicit in the caption accompanying the video. “Our strength does not bend, our flag does not surrender, and our sovereignty has no price,” he wrote, adding, “The future of Brazil belongs to those who cultivate life and protect their land.”

“LO QUE LE PASÓ A HAWAii” draws parallels between Puerto Rico and Hawaii while addressing gentrification, US influence, privatization, and the preservation of Puerto Rican identity.
