Man charged with killing fellow resident at Tg Rambutan care centre
A resident of a care centre in Tanjung Rambutan, Perak, was charged at the magistrates’ court here with the murder of a fellow resident on Sept 3.
No plea was recorded from Soo Kim Keong, 51, after the charge was read before magistrate Norizan Riduan as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
Soo is accused of murdering Chong Mun Long, 28, at the Grace Home Care Centre at Jalan Chemor, Tanjung Rambutan, between 3am and 4am on the day in question.
He was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or 30 to 40 years in prison and no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.
The magistrate ordered Soo to be referred to Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta for a psychiatric examination and fixed Oct 30 for the next case mention and submission of the psychiatric report.
Deputy public prosecutor S Kirthana appeared for the prosecution while Soo was unrepresented.
Chong was found unconscious at the care centre on Sept 3, allegedly following a misunderstanding with another resident.
He died on Sept 17 at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital due to a lung infection and blunt-force trauma to the head.
