Egypt Prepares Trial Operations for Line 1 of Sokhna–Alamein–Matrouh High-Speed Electric Rail Network

Egypt’s Ministry of Transport is preparing to begin a trial run (without passengers) for a section of Line 1 of the “Sokhna–Alamein–Matrouh” high-speed electric train network.

According to the ministry, substantial progress has already been made across multiple route sections handed over to the international consortium comprising Siemens, Orascom, and Arab Contractors, while field work continues at full pace to ensure the system’s readiness.

Construction began in 2021, with trial runs now underway and opening targeted for late 2026.

Work on the network includes the installation of sleepers, laying of ballast and rails, erecting catenary masts, and the implementation of electromechanical systems. Officials said these measures are being taken to test operational efficiency against the highest global safety standards before a gradual rollout across all route segments.

Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir emphasized that the high-speed electric rail network is an integrated development project rather than a transportation project alone.

He described Line 1 as a key axis within Egypt’s Sokhna–Alexandria logistics corridor, noting that it can be understood as a (new Suez Canal on tracks) because it provides a direct and rapid connection between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean.

The full high-speed electric rail network consists of four main lines spanning 2,250 kilometres and including 60 stations, with the first three lines accounting for 2,000 kilometres under construction.

Officials detailed the major service infrastructure inside the workshop complex, including a major overhaul building covering 67,000 square metres with areas for periodic and comprehensive maintenance, specialized auxiliary workshops and extensive storage.

The depot includes train storage buildings covering 28,000 square metres and an additional building covering 17,000 square metres, alongside auxiliary technical buildings such as operations facilities, a paint shop, mechanical and manual washing areas, and specialized structures for track and sleeper maintenance, as well as service and security facilities.
