To improve security in schools, the Adamawa State Government has commenced the fencing of schools, particularly those in rural areas, to prevent the kidnapping of students and teachers.

The Executive Chairman of the Adamawa State Universal Basic Education Commission, Dr Murtala Umar, disclosed this to journalists on Thursday in Yola.

He said the administration of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri was concerned about the security of citizens and students in the state.

“Fencing of all government secondary schools is ongoing now. Watertight security is going to be provided, and teachers are going to be trained on security tips to enable them to detect when a problem is coming and take proactive measures,” he said.

Umar disclosed that the state government would soon commence the recruitment of another 3,000 teachers to fill staff gaps in the education sector.

“The next recruitment is strictly going to be community-based. This is because when teachers are recruited and posted, they transfer to towns, so the schools in rural areas are left with little staff.

“We introduced the community-based recruitment strategy to ensure that only those based in the areas where the schools are located will be recruited.”

Umar, who commended the governor, pointed out that education had occupied a prime place in the present administration’s development agenda.

“We have accessed and utilised Universal Basic Education Commission funding, which has resulted in the construction of over 25,000 classrooms in various schools across the state under the leadership of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri.

“Between 2021 and 2023, we recruited more than 4,000 teachers in our primary and post-primary schools. The good news is that we have just finished the recruitment of another batch of 5,000 teachers. This is the wonderful job the present administration is doing in the education sector.”
