SINGAPORE, Sept 4 — Singapore will begin issuing daily haze advisories from Friday evening after air quality in the central region deteriorated into the unhealthy range, prompting government agencies to activate their haze response plans.
The National Environment Agency (NEA) said the advisories would include a 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) forecast to help people plan outdoor activities and events, Singapore-based media organisation CNA reported.
The move comes after the 24-hour PSI in central Singapore crossed into the unhealthy range of 101 to 200 at 7am on Friday, the first time it has done so due to haze since Oct 8, 2023.
The reading rose further to 105 at 10am.
In a joint statement issued on behalf of agencies in the Haze Task Force, NEA said the agencies had implemented their respective action plans and public advisories to safeguard health and well-being.
“The health impact of the haze is dependent on each individual’s health status, the PSI level, and the duration and intensity of outdoor activity. Reducing outdoor activities and physical exertion can help limit the ill effects from haze exposure,” NEA said.
It also advised people to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
Those with chronic heart or lung conditions should keep their medication readily available, while vulnerable groups — including older people, pregnant women and children — were urged to seek medical attention promptly if they developed symptoms or felt unwell.
“Those with chronic heart and lung conditions should ensure that medications are on hand and readily accessible. Vulnerable persons, especially the elderly, pregnant women, children, and those with chronic heart and lung conditions, who develop symptoms or feel unwell, should seek medical attention promptly,” NEA said.
The daily advisories will give the public a 24-hour outlook on expected air quality as authorities continue to monitor the haze situation.
