A pensioner has been charged with causing the death of an off-duty police officer by dangerous driving.

Pc Alice Mayo, 29, was driving a blue Fiat 500 which was involved in a collision with a white Land Rover Defender in the Cheshire village of Arclid on the morning of 7 February.

The Cheshire Constabulary officer was pronounced dead at the scene in Spark Lane.

On Thursday, a police spokesman said: “Following a detailed investigation, David Millar, of Sandbach Road, Congleton, has now been charged with one count of causing a death by dangerous driving.

“The 78-year-old has been bailed and is next set to appear at Crewe Magistrates’ Court on November 23.”

Following the death of the Macclesfield beat officer, her family paid tribute to her as “beautiful inside and out”.

Her family added: “Alice meant so much to so many. She will leave a huge hole in our lives, but also a legacy of laughter, fun and sunshine.

“She achieved so much in her short life and leaves behind a heartbroken but incredibly proud family.”

Mark Roberts, the chief constable of Cheshire Constabulary, said after her death: “This was a tragic incident, and my thoughts are with Alice’s family, friends, and colleagues at this difficult time.

“I want to pay tribute to our professional and courageous colleague. She was a dedicated professional who will be missed by all those who knew her.

“We are supporting Alice’s family and colleagues at this extremely difficult time.”
