Fire at Shizuoka shipyard leaves one dead, nine sent to hospital

SHIZUOKA – One person died in a fire that broke out at a shipyard in the city of Shizuoka on Friday morning.

Around 8:50 a.m., the local fire department received an emergency call from a shipyard employee reporting that the inside of a ship had caught fire. According to the Shizuoka Prefectural Police and firefighters, nine other people have been taken to hospital.

Police said several people were working inside the ship when the fire broke out. The authorities are investigating details surrounding the incident, including the cause of the fire.

The ship, measuring roughly 70 meters in length overall, has been under construction by Shizuoka-based Kanasashi Heavy Industries, NHK reported.
