Body of man in his 20s is found inside home 'alongside substances' on quiet Wirral street: Police probing 'unexpected' death

A bomb squad was called in to remove 'substances' from a house in Merseyside after the body of a man in his 20s was found inside.

North West Ambulance Service informed police shortly after 3.55pm on Saturday that paramedics had found a deceased man while attending a property in Oxton, Wirral.

Merseyside Police has launched a probe and the man's death is now being treated as 'unexpected'. The man has yet to be named.

Neighbours reported officers arriving in large numbers on Saturday and a bodybag being removed from the premises on Sunday.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) was tasked with removing 'substances' from inside the house, but at this stage there is no wider risk to the public, the force confirmed. The force did not specify what the material removed by EOD was.

The man's next of kin has been informed and a file will be passed to the coroner.

Reedville, where the body was discovered, is a relatively affluent one-way street comprised of grand, mostly red-brick Victorian homes with large elegant gardens.

Merseyside Police confirmed on Sunday evening that emergency services remain at the scene. Around five police cars and three police vans were visible outside the property.

Neighbours said last night that they have been told officers will remain at the location for at least another two days. There was also mention of a possible search.

One neighbour said: 'This is normally a really quiet street. But over 20 police vehicles arrived on Saturday along with an ambulance.

'I've never seen so many police vehicles. Officers were taking photographs inside into the night.

'I saw about eight forensics officers pile out of one huge van. It's very worrying.'

Another woman said: 'I saw body being removed earlier this afternoon. I didn't know the family but there were a few people living there.

'They were very quiet. They very much kept themselves to themselves.'

A spokesman for the force said: 'Merseyside Police can confirm that emergency services remain in Oxton today (Sunday 4 October) following a sudden death yesterday.

'Shortly after 3.55pm on Saturday 3 October, North West Ambulance Service reported they had attended a property on Reedville where they had found a man in his 20s sadly deceased inside.

'Merseyside Police has launched an investigation and following initial enquiries, his death is being treated as unexpected. His next of kin has been informed and a file will be passed to the Coroner.

'As a precaution, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) have attended to assess and remove substances located inside the premises and have deemed there is no wider risk to the public at this stage.'
