The Argentina Football Association announced on Friday that Argentina was granted a reprieve from sanctions against its defender, Nahuel Molina, due to his conduct during the final.

After the FIFA World Cup 2026 final between Argentina and Spain, an altercation broke out between the players, with Leandro Paredes punching Pablo Martín Páez Gavira, which escalated into a full-blown scuffle.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee took note of the episode and announced the following sanctions against Argentine players and staff in August:

  • Leandro Paredes (player): a 10 -match suspension and a fine of USD 90,000.
  • Nahuel Molina (player): a seven-match suspension and a fine of USD 90,000.
  • Thiago Almada (player): a one-match suspension and a fine of USD 30,000.
  • Roberto Ayala (team official): a three-match suspension and a fine of USD 30,000.

Argentina had appealed the decisions and saw only Molina’s punishment revised. The Roma right-back will now serve a four-match suspension instead of seven and a USD 60,000 fine instead of USD 90,000.

The remaining penalties, including those against Argentina for discriminatory chants, remain unchanged.

Argentina, which reached the FIFA World Cup 2026 final and won the edition before, will play Uruguay and Costa Rica in the November window. It will be the first set of matches after the international retirement of its record goalscorer Lionel Messi.
