Anrich Nortje’s Test return: Secret weapon for Proteas vs Australia?

Translate

Could Anrich Nortje be the Proteas’ secret weapon in the Tests against Australia?

Coach Shukri Conrad called up the right-arm pace bowler as the team continues to struggle with injuries.

South Africa kick off the three-game home Test series in Durban on Friday, 9 October.

Anrich Nortje’s Test return has been a long road, but things aren’t going to get any easier.

When last did Anrich Nortje play a Test?

His last red-ball game for the Proteas was the first Test against the West Indies in 2023.

The swing and pace specialist claimed six wickets in that game, according to ESPN Cricinfo.

In September 2023, Nortje was named in South Africa’s Cricket World Cup squad, but was later ruled out injured.

According to Reuters, persistent back and hip problems saw him focus on shorter formats, particularly T20s.

This makes it three years since the right-armer has played Test cricket, something he has acknowledged.

“I’ll be very excited if I can put my Test cap on again. Growing up, it’s the format you want to play. It’s the motivation when you train,” he said, as quoted by the ICC website.

Nortje facing massive test against Australia

Nortje’s return to the Test squad follows a series of recent injuries to more regular Proteas bowlers.

Lungi Ngidi, Ottneil Baartman, and Kwena Maphaka were all ruled out with hamstring strains.

Kagiso Rabada, who was injured in August, remains a late call for the Proteas selectors.

According to Business Day, batting coach Ashwell Prince confirmed the pace bowler had joined team training.

“I think we will leave a call to be made as late as possible.”

Whether or not Rabada is fit in time for the Test starting on Friday, both men are already in the preliminary squad.

If Nortje starts at Kingsmead, he could be handed the new ball to generate reverse swing and speed.

Australia are leading the World Test Championship standings, with South Africa currently in second place.
