Juventus condemns fans who interrupted minute’s silence for Sandro Mazzola

Italian giant Juventus has strongly condemned its own fans who interrupted the a minute’s silence to honour former Italy and Inter Milan star Sandro Mazzola, ahead of its Serie A 2026-27 game against Atalanta on Sunday.

Serie A had planned that all matches over the weekend would have a tribute for Mazzola, who passed away aged 83 on Friday.

However, the minute’s silence was interrupted ahead of the match in Turin by Juventus fans who turned their backs on the field and chanted songs about their own club legends.

“No rivalry can justify a lack of respect during a minute’s silence,” Juventus said in a statement.

“Honouring the memory of those being remembered and coming together in remembrance during moments of commemoration is a shared responsibility that transcends allegiances and colours,” the club added.

Italy’s sporting justice system is looking into the incident and could hand the club a fine or even ban the ultras for a match.

Juventus could risk a fine or even having the Curva Sud — the sector where the ultras sit and where the disturbance happened — closed for a match. A decision by Italy’s sporting justice system is expected early this week.
