Resident Evil 1 Remake Teaser Has Fans Seriously Excited

Resident Evil has already gone down in history as one of the most influential games ever. While there were titles that dabbled in survival horror in the past, like Sweet Home, the original Resident Evil managed to usher in a whole new era of survival horror, creating an entire cottage industry of similar games from the first PlayStation onward.

Since then, it's branched into movies, TV, and a ton of other mainline and side projects in the Resident Evil universe. But thanks to a new update on Reddit, fans are clamoring for yet another crack at the first game, with another remake. Based on new info, it could be coming sooner rather than later.

Based on the news from the reliable Resident Evil leaker BoneGolem, it seems like the Resident Evil 1 Remake started pre-production "around" August or September of last year, and is allegedly in development in earnest. Once Resident Evil Veronica is finished, it will apparently go full speed ahead.

For reference, this is technically the second remake of the 1996 PlayStation classic, based on the 2002 GameCube release. This upcoming project will likely take place within the new remake continuity from 2019 onward.

One fan is excited that they decided to wait before pulling the trigger on the current remake, which is live on Steam and other modern platforms: "I'm so glad that I didn't buy the 2002 remake when I saw it on sale. I'm gonna go into this new remake with a fresh mind, without having played any of the previous versions."

Others don't need another remake at all: "Nope. Been playing the remake for 20 years now, it’s fantastic and available on most platforms now - you don’t need a GameCube."

Select fans are stoked to see how certain characters will turn out, since they haven't been part of the main story so far: "I know we'll see him in Veronica first, but I'm kind of excited to see Remake universe Chris design. They're probably not changing him too much, but we've only really seen buff Chris for the last 20 years or so, so I'm curious what a modern take on younger Chris is going to look like."

Some enthusiasts still want other remakes before the first game: "If they're going to take another shot at RE1 (albeit likely with the third-person camera), then I hope they consider having another go at RE3 in the future. Considering how amazing all the remakes have been so far, it's so frustrating that RE3 got the shaft the way it did."

This remake (of the remake) of Resident Evil 1 has the potential to be pretty huge. The visuals on the RE Engine have only gotten better with each game, including Resident Evil Requiem. If this project takes place in the new continuity (which is assumed), Capcom could rewrite parts of the Spencer Mansion story while bringing more classic characters like Wesker into the mix.

Even if the experience is wholly familiar, Resident Evil fans will find plenty of lore tidbits to grab onto and potentially pick apart. I can't wait to see what the Spencer Mansion looks like in the modern era with a new coat of paint. The first remake already did a stellar job of recreating that claustrophobic feel and the horror of the original setting.
