Victoria Bossong makes a strong case for the women's 800m gold medal in the 2026 Asian Games as she posts the fastest time in the heats

MANILA, Philippines – Winning an Asian Games gold medal looks like a very real possibility for Victoria Bossong.

The Filipina-American middle distance specialist posted the fastest time in the heats of the women’s 800m on Monday, September 28, at Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium as she reinforced her status as one of the Philippines’ top medal bets.

Bossong clocked 2 minutes and 2.32 seconds to banner the eight-woman final on Tuesday, September 29.

China’s Li Chunhui turned in the second-best time of 2:02.35, followed by Uzbekistan’s Sabokhat Samijonova with 2:02.64.

Bossong can go significantly faster as she owns a personal best of 1:58.52, which she achieved just last June in the USA Track and Field Lone Star Grand Prix. 

That mark eclipses the Asian Games record of 1:59.02 set by Kazakhstan’s Margarita Mukasheva in the 2014 edition. 

Bossong, whose mother, Catalina Atienza, is from Mindoro, gained eligibility to represent the Philippines in July and is flying the national colors in a multi-sport event for the first time.

Aside from Bossong, EJ Obiena is expected to deliver for the Philippine athletics team as he looks to defend his crown in the men’s pole vault final, also on Tuesday.

The Philippines has won one athletics medal so far courtesy of John Cabang Tolentino, who clinched the bronze in the men’s 110m hurdles. – Rappler.com
